Roadrunners come up short in San Jose, suffer 3-2 loss

By: Alex Kinkopf

The Roadrunners endured their first regulation loss in seven games on Sunday afternoon, coming up short against the San Jose Barracuda at the SAP Center in a 3-2 defeat.

The Barracuda built a 2-0 lead in the first period with goals from Alex Schoenborn and Julius Bergman.

In the opening moments of the second, Lawson Crouse shoveled home his ninth goal of the season to get the Roadrunners on the board, cutting San Jose’s lead in half.

Crouse, after picking a puck out of the corner, muscled his way toward the net and beat San Jose’s Stephon Williams for his first goal since February 5.

Dakota Mermis, in registering the secondary assist on Crouse’s goal, now has points in seven of the team’s last 11 games.

San Jose responded two minutes later, reclaiming a two-goal lead. Adin Hill was pulled following the Barracuda’s third goal; he allowed three goals on nine shots faced in 25:22 minutes of action.

Hunter Miska came on in relief of Hill, and was strong. Miska stopped all 20 of the shots fired his way over a 32:56 minute span – providing the Roadrunners with a chance to even things out.

A mere 20 seconds into the third period, after the Roadrunners suffocated a Barracuda clearing attempt, Ryan MacInnis walked into a Tye McGinn pass and beat San Jose’s Williams with a shot across his body high to the glove side.

MacInnis’ goal, his fifth of the season, cut San Jose’s lead to 3-2.

The Roadrunners were unable to tack on a game-tying goal, finishing their season series against the Barracuda with a 3-4-1-0 record.

With the loss, the Roadrunners’ record updates to 36-19-5-1, good for first-place in the Pacific Division, and second-place in the Western Conference. Their magic number to clinch a playoff spot remains at seven.

The team will continue its four-game road trip Friday night when they take on the Iowa Wild at Wells Fargo Arena, where the puck is scheduled to drop just after 5:00 PM PST.
