Last Week Today: Two For The Road

By: Alexander Kinkopf

The Rundown:

Embarking on their first road trip of the season riding momentum from a successful homecoming the week prior, the Roadrunners stayed true to the win column, topping two opponents in consecutive nights in separate cities.

On Friday, the Roadrunners spoiled the San Diego Gulls’ opener at the Valley View Casino Center by way of a 3-2 win, extending their streak of consecutive victories against their division rival to five games. They have not dropped a game to the Gulls since February 3 of last season. Hunter Miska made a career-high 42 saves in the victory.

24 hours later and 230 miles north toward central California, the Roadrunners edged the Bakersfield Condors by a 2-1 score at Rabobank Arena, honoring their history at said setting by sticking to their trend of winning at the Condors’ home rink. The Roadrunners improved to 7-1-1-0 all time in Bakersfield, a building they have not lost in since December 3, 2016.

At week’s end, the Roadrunners are one of five of the AHL’s 31 teams to be without a loss of any kind. The other four: Charlotte Checkers, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, Chicago Wolves, and Iowa Wild.

Cam Dineen registered his first professional point Friday while making his pro debut, credited with the crucial secondary assist on Michael Bunting’s game-opening goal Hudson Fasching netted his first goal in a Roadrunners uniform Saturday Conor Garland returned to the team’s lineup with a multi-point performance, notching two assists Friday Adam Helewka buried his team-leading third goal of the season Saturday, the game-winner with 0.1 seconds (later corrected to 1.4) left in the second period.

Alumni in Action:

Wednesday night at Honda Center, Dylan Strome received a pass from Clayton Keller and walked in from the right half wall, beating John Gibson with a wrist-shot through the five-hole, momentarily tying what would turn to be a 3-2 shootout victory for the Coyotes over the Anaheim Ducks. Strome’s tally, a power play strike, was the first goal of the season for Arizona.

Highlight of the Week:

Michael Bunting opened the scoring Friday night in San Diego when he adjusted to turn into a perfectly placed pass from Conor Garland. Garland, in his first game back with the Roadrunners after starting the season on injured reserve, found a lane to deliver a seeing-eye puck through the stick of Mitch Hults to beautifully register the first of his two assists on the evening.

Popping into focus in front a displeased backdrop to complement a dynamic contrast of emotion, Dakota Mermis, Cam Dineen, and Laurent Dauphin huddle to congratulate Michael Bunting after he gives the Roadrunners an early 1-0 lead in Friday’s 3-2 win over the San Diego Gulls at the Valley View Casino Center.
