Roadrunners Ink Four As Summer Signings Heat Up

By: Tucson Roadrunners
TUCSON, AZ - Tucson Roadrunners General Manager Steve Sullivan announced today that the team has signed four players to the squad for the 2017-18 Season. Goaltender Michael Houser has signed a one-way American Hockey League contract while defenseman Ryan Culkin and left wings Scott Allen and Trevor Cheek signed AHL-ECHL two-way contracts.
Hailing from Youngstown, Ohio, Houser comes to Tucson with an impressive resume from his Ontario Junior Hockey League days with the London Knights. The 2011-12 Season ranks as his best, leading the Knights to the OHL Championship title and a Memorial Cup berth. For his efforts, Houser was named Canadian Hockey League goaltender of the year (includes all three Canadian major junior leagues – Western Hockey League, Ontario Hockey League, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League), Ontario Hockey League goaltender of the year, OHL First-Team All-Star, Memorial Cup All-Star, and captured the Red Tilson Trophy as the OHL’s Most Outstanding Player. Since turning pro Houser has appeared in 72 games at the AHL level, going 32-26-4-2 with a .901 save percentage and 2.88 goals against average with the San Antonio Rampage, Ontario Reign and Cleveland Monsters. Overall Houser has amassed 86 wins and eight shutouts in five pro seasons.
Cheek, 24, may be the most well-known name for Roadrunners fans having appeared in 23 games for the team last season with four assists and 10 minutes in penalties. The Vancouver, WA native also appeared in 35 games for the ECHL’s Fort Wayne Komets, totaling 19 goals and 34 points in that span. Since turning pro in 2013-14 with the Lake Erie (now Cleveland) Monsters, the 6-2, 205-pound Cheek has appeared in significant AHL action each season, playing in a career-high 66 AHL games in 2014-15 with Lake Erie and putting up 6-9-15 over that span.
The 27-year-old Allen spent four years at the University of Alaska-Anchorage before turning pro with the Colorado Eagles after his senior season in the spring of 2015. Last year was a breakout season for the Edmonton, Alberta native as he spent the entire year in the AHL with the Bakersfield Condors, scoring eight goals and totaling 19 points with 26 minutes in penalties.
Culkin was originally a fifth-round draft choice (#124 overall) by the Calgary Flames in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. The 6-2, 201-pound defenseman has appeared in a total of 83 AHL games over the last three seasons, scoring twice and adding 18 assists for 20 points. Last season Allen played 19 games for Roadrunners division rival Stockton Heat, posting no points and four minutes in penalties.
