Last Week Today: Hitting Columns

The Rundown:

Each game presented a different avenue to result, and more often than not, 60 minutes just wasn't cutting it.

To start the week, the Roadrunners put a cap on their first road trip of the season, grinding late into the San Jose night in an affair that extended into overtime and a six-round shootout, the result a 3-2 loss on Monday evening to the Barracuda at the SAP Center.

Dakota Mermis buried his first goal of the season and Adam Helewka continued his torrid start, finding the net against his former team.

Shifting back home Friday for a back-to-back weekend series against the Rockford IceHogs, the Roadrunners’ 14th opponent in franchise history, the team found itself in an overtime battle once again.

With 27 seconds left in the extra frame, Conor Garland sped into Rockford territory to beat Kevin Lankinen high to the blocker side, securing a 4-3 win for the Roadrunners – the 20th overtime victory in club history and the 10th at Tucson Arena.

In game two against Rockford Saturday, the Roadrunners suffered their first regulation loss of the season despite outshooting the IceHogs by a 38-26 margin. Jens Looke, in his return to the lineup, scored his third goal of the year; he now has four points (3G, 1A) in three games played this season.

The Roadrunners were the 29th team in the American Hockey League to put a dent in their loss column; only the Springfield Thunderbirds remain unbeaten. With a 1-1-0-1 record during the week, the Roadrunners stand just where they have the previous two years through six games – with a .750 win percentage.

To summarize: Tucson, during the week, saw one game end in regulation, one in overtime, and one in a shootout.

Where They Stand:

Pacific Division: 2nd Place

Alumni in Action:

Lawson Crouse drove hard to the net to open the scoring Thursday night in the Arizona Coyotes’ eventual 4-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks at the United Center. Crouse, who registered 32 points (15G, 17A) in 56 games with the Roadrunners last season, pounded a Clayton Keller feed past Corey Crawford to finish the two-on-one sequence, burying his first goal of the year.

Highlight of the Week:

In his return to his former home building and against his former team, Adam Helewka struck to score his fourth goal of the season, speeding into a wondrous pass delivered by Laurent Dauphin to beat Antoine Bibeau, giving the Roadrunners a momentary 2-1 lead over the San Jose Barracuda Monday night at the SAP Center.
