What’s Up

Last Week Today: Central Swing

By: Alexander Kinkopf

The Rundown:

The Central Division called, carrying the Roadrunners through Michigan and Ohio during the week as the club hit and surpassed the 50-game mark. They touched on every standings column but the shootout in their three games played, posting a 1-1-1-0 record, adding three points to their current season total of 65.

Welcome back, and welcome to. A bevy of new names made their debuts, while a familiar face, after some time away, graced the lineup, cleared and able.

Wednesday night, a 3-2 loss to the Grand Rapids Griffins, saw Nick Merkley return to the Roadrunners’ alignment for the first time since January 26. After missing 11 games, he made his presence felt almost immediately, dishing a cross-slot pass through traffic to connect with Dylan Strome for the team’s first goal of the evening.

History was made in the Roadrunners’ 5-1 victory over the Cleveland Monsters on Friday when Carter Camper, who was making his Tucson debut against his former team, registered five assists, setting a franchise record for points recorded in a single game.

Mario Kempe, the beneficiary of three of Camper’s five assists, netted the third hat-trick in Roadrunners history and the third of his pro career.

The Roadrunners suffered a 3-2 overtime loss in their final meeting of the season with the Monsters Sunday afternoon. Adin Hill put forth his fifth 30+ save performance of the season; he has not lost a start in regulation since January 27.

The team’s trade deadline acquisitions were quick to produce in their first set of games, combining for eight points (Carter Camper – 5A | Trevor Murphy - 1G, 1A | Pierre-Cedric Labrie - 1G) during the week.

Highlight of the Week:

Midway through the second period Friday night at Quicken Loans Arena, Mario Kempe led Michael Bunting with a stretch pass through the neutral zone. Corraling Kempe's pass in stride, Bunting sped in alone to beat Jeff Zatkoff with a shot to the far side to give the Roadrunners a 4-1 lead over the Cleveland Monsters, scoring his 15th goal of the season.
